Chinese green technology company Envision Group announced on Thursday a sweeping plan to construct 5 gigawatts of green artificial intelligence computing centers across global desert regions, including the Gobi, by 2030.
The company announced the plan as part of efforts to build stable, eco-friendly and cost-effective infrastructure for the AI era.
The ambitious target was unveiled during the VivaTech in Paris, one of the world’s leading innovation forums. According to the company, it signals a major push to align the booming demand for AI computing power with global sustainability goals.
“As the AI computing storm sweeps the globe, traditional power grids are struggling to bear the weight of this transformation,” said Zhang Lei, chairman of Envision Group.
“Starting from the Gobi Desert, Envision is bringing its AI power system to the world — offering a Chinese solution to break the electricity bottlenecks facing the artificial intelligence era.”
The rapid iteration of large language models and advanced semiconductor chips has placed unprecedented pressure on global data centers, requiring massive grid-access capacity, faster dispatch speeds, power source stability, and a significantly higher proportion of renewable electricity.
To realize these goals, Envision has built three core capabilities into its framework: physical artificial intelligence, an “intelligent hub” that serves as the nervous system of the AI power grid, and robust, next-generation power infrastructure.
