Strongly opposing the United States’ new tariff decision on Chinese goods, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) called on the US side to halt unilateral measures and pursue dialogue to de-escalate trade tensions.
The tariff hike is a violation of World Trade Organization rules, which not only fails to resolve the US’ own economic issues, but also undermines normal cooperation between the two sides, the chamber said in its statement issued on Friday.
The CCCME warned that the new tariff could destabilize supply chains, raise costs and impose broader negative effects on the trade ecosystem, undermining the strong trade relations and mutual benefits that the two countries have long enjoyed.
“Mutual benefit and win-win cooperation are the right paths forward for development,” the chamber stated, calling on the US side to abandon protectionist policies and engage in constructive dialogue to jointly maintain an open, fair and stable international trade environment.
Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced an additional 10 percent tariff on all imports from China, adding to existing tariffs. The move has to date sparked widespread opposition both domestically within the US and internationally.
