Euro area

The first estimates of euro area balance showed a €9.9 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in April 2025, compared with + €13.6 bn in April 2024.

The euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world in April 2025 were €243.0 billion, a decrease of 1.4% compared with April 2024 (€246.5 bn).

International trade in goods of the euro area

In April 2025, the euro area balance declined significantly compared to March 2025, with the total surplus dropping from €37.3 billion to €9.9 bn. This decrease was mainly driven by a substantial reduction in the surplus of the chemicals sector, which fell from €42.8 bn to €22.1 bn.

However, when compared to April 2024 , the drop of euro area balance appears more moderate ( down by €3.7 bn). This year-on-year decrease is largely attributable to the lower surplus in the “Machineries & Vehicles” sector, which declined from €16.8 billion to €12.8 bn. The deficit of energy products showed a modest improvement of €0.5 bn compared to the same month of the previous year.

Euro area balance by product group

International trade in goods of the EU

In April 2025, the EU balance declined to €7.4 billion, down significantly from €35.5 billion in March 2025. This drop was primarily driven by the contraction of the chemicals sector surplus, which fell from €41.6 billion to €20.4 billion – a reduction of over 50%.

However, compared to April 2024, when the total surplus was €12.8 billion, the decrease was more modest, amounting to €5.4 billion. Revisions and timetable

This News Release is based on information transmitted by Member States to Eurostat before10 June 2025 Figures are provisional. For more details, see information on data.

Methods and definitions

Statistics on trade in goods are transmitted monthly by the Member States, in accordance with the standard set out in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1197. For each reference month, Member States must compile statistics covering their total extra- and intra-EU trade by using estimates, where necessary. These data are available within 40 days after the end of the reference month, enabling euro area and EU aggregates to be disseminated within around 46 days.

Member States provide Eurostat with raw data, which are adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects by Eurostat. The European aggregates are computed with the indirect approach (by Member States) for total imports and exports, which guarantees additivity between the aggregate and its respective components. The estimation of seasonally adjusted data is based on the Tramo-Seats procedure, which is available in the software JDemetra+.

Data are broken down by broad categories of products as defined by the one-digit codes of the Standard international trade classification (SITC).
