In June 2025, the euro area balance decreased compared to May 2025, with the surplus falling from €16.5 bn to €7.0 bn. This decline was mainly driven by a drop in the surplus of chemicals and related products, which fell from €24.4 bn to €15.1 bn,
Compared to June 2024, the euro area balance contracted by €13.7 bn, mainly due to a reduction of surplus in the chemicals and related products (from €20.6 bn to €15.1 bn), machinery & vehicles (from €17.4 bn to €13.6 bn) and other manufactured products (which shifted from a surplus of €2.4 bn to a deficit of €0.4 bn).

European Union
The EU balance showed a €8.0 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in June 2025, compared with +€20.3 bn in June 2024.
The extra-EU exports of goods in June 2025 were €213.7 billion, stable compared with June 2024 (€213.7 bn).
Imports from the rest of the world stood at €205.7 bn, up by 6.4% compared with June 2024 (€193.4 bn).
In June 2025, the EU surplus decreased compared to May 2025, falling from €13.0 bn to €8.0 bn. This drop was largely driven by a sharp decline in the chemicals surplus, which fell from €23.2 bn to €14.3 bn, partially offset by a smaller energy deficit (from –€25.2 bn to –€23.4 bn) and a modest increase in the machinery & vehicles surplus (from €15.0 bn to €16.4 bn).
Compared to June 2024, the EU surplus contracted by €12.3 bn, mainly due to lower surplus in machinery and vehicles (from €21.3 bn to €16.4 bn), chemicals and related products (from €19.1 bn to €14.3 bn), and other manufactured goods (from a surplus of €1.9 bn to a deficit of €1.4 bn). These declines outweighed the positive impact of a reduced energy deficit (from –€26.5 bn to –€23.4 bn).
In January to June 2025, the EU recorded a surplus of €80.1 bn, compared with €92.9 bn in January-June 2024.

Revisions and timetable
This News Release is based on information transmitted by Member States to Eurostat before12 August 2025 figures are provisional. For more details, see information on data.
Methods and definitions
Statistics on trade in goods are transmitted monthly by the Member States, in accordance with the standard set out in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1197. For each reference month, Member States must compile statistics covering their total extra- and intra-EU trade by using estimates, where necessary. These data are available within 40 days after the end of the reference month, enabling euro area and EU aggregates to be disseminated within around 46 days.
Member States provide Eurostat with raw data, which are adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects by Eurostat. The European aggregates are computed with the indirect approach (by Member States) for total imports and exports, which guarantees additivity between the aggregate and its respective components. The estimation of seasonally adjusted data is based on the Tramo-Seats procedure, which is available in the software JDemetra+.
Data are broken down by broad categories of products as defined by the one-digit codes of the Standard international trade classification (SITC).
