By the end of July, Shanghai had received a total of 2,245 applications for data product intellectual property registration, with 1,592 certificates granted. Xu Shang, a second-level inspector at the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, released the data during a Friday news briefing.
In the first half of this year, both the number of applications and registrations for data product IP in Shanghai quadrupled on a yearly basis, he added.
Among the applications, data processing products accounted for the lion’s share of about 47 percent. In terms of industry distribution, artificial intelligence-related products made up 50 percent of the total applications, while biomedicine accounted for 25 percent. The applications cover a wide range of sectors, including model corpora, computing power and algorithms, financial services, education and culture, transportation and agricultural technology.
Excluding major data products from platforms such as Taobao, Douyin and securities firms, the registered data products have generated about 20.3 billion yuan ($3 billion) in cumulative economic value through licensing, transactions and services. Meanwhile, 24 enterprises have secured 547 million yuan in pledge financing by using their data IP rights, Xu said.
To date, data products from other 29 provincial-level regions have applied for registration in Shanghai. Products from outside Shanghai now account for 30 percent of total applications, indicating that the pilot program has begun to demonstrate its nationwide influence, he added.
